GET TO KNOW ALI
FRESH OFF A HUGE WIN
Congratulations on your recent win at Submission Kings!
How does it feel to have taken down one of the top athletes in the country?
It feels good. It’s a massive win for me and my team and I can’t wait to see what comes of it.
Walk us through that match—what was your strategy going in, and did anything surprise you?
Going into the match we knew that Aidan was gonna be really strong from the top with lots of pressure so strategy going in was to be able to establish strong frames to lessen the pressure and enter the legs off it. Being the smaller guy I had to make sure my technique was sound and not to leave too much space to get passed and if that happened being able to frame and reguard. One thing that surprised me was how comfortable he was in outside Ashi and his willingness to engage in the legs with me.
Was there a turning point in the match where you knew you had it?
I would say the turning point in the match is when I entered cross ashi and transferred to outside. Once I had established the position and saw he couldn’t clear the legs I knew I had it as it was only a matter of time before I managed to fetch a heel.
What does this victory mean for you and your career?
For me this victory is a big first step in being able to make this a profession. From here I’m hoping more opportunities for bigger competitions both domestically and internationally open up for me. I just need to keep at it and keep getting better so that I’m able to capitalise on those opportunities when they come.

JOURNEY & BACKGROUND
How did you first get into Jiu Jitsu, and what made you stick with it?
So I initially started training boxing and mma when I lived in the UK. I really resonated with the ground aspect of the sport but I never thought about only doing Jiu Jitsu until I moved back to South Africa. I think what made me stick to it was just as simple as how much I enjoyed it and wanted to do more of it. I wish I had a fancy explanation on why I fell in love with the sport and such but honestly for me it was just such a funny hobby that I kept doing more of.
Can you remember your first-ever competition?
How did it go?
The first time I ever competed in anything was an amateur mma fight in the UK. I just came from South Africa a week before the fight from holiday and heading back to training I said to my coach at the time that I really wanted to fight before the end of the year and he just responded that there was a fight that weekend at my weight class if I wanted and I just couldn’t resist. The fight itself was an absolutely awful though. I remember how nervous I was before the fight because the guy was in a lot better shape then me and with us not wearing shin guards I thought I was gonna get hurt. I tried to solve this issue by taking 4 scoops of pre workout 30 mins before the fight and this caused a massive adrenaline dump. Somehow I still won using wrestling but after that I learnt a lot of valuable lessons.
Who has been the biggest influence on your
BJJ journey?
I think the biggest influences has to be my 3 coaches Chris, Dyl and Johan. Seeing how committed and hardworking they were inspired me to do the same and to be as good as them not only in Jiu Jitsu but as a person as well.
What’s been the hardest part of your journey so far?
The Hardest part about my journey so far I’d say is balancing my studies and training at the same time. Though this is still much easier than balancing a job and training so actually I’d say compared to some others competitors I’m pretty fortunate.
TRAINING & MINDSET
What does a typical training week look like for you?
A typical week is training every evening from Monday to Friday and during the day depending on what training sessions are available I’d either be at the weight lifting gym, afternoon class or taking a private. This way I can always consistently train at least twice a day.
How do you mentally prepare for big matches? Any pre-fight rituals?
I think the best way I prepare mentally is the prepare physically. I noticed that the more prepared or the more I trained for a match or tournament the less nervous and more confident I was on the day. Of course some good music is always helpful in zoning in too.
If you could improve one part of your game overnight, what would it be?
I think the game I’d improve would be outside passing. It’s something that I been meaning to work on. Plus it’s something that’s useful and all levels and skills .
What advice would you give to up-and-coming competitors?
I’d say I’m still an up and coming competitor so any advice anyone else can give I’d appreciate. But I think one that helped me was to not focus on your opponent but rather yourself. Try to view it as are you better than your previous self rather than are you better than your opponent?
FUN & PERSONAL
If you could have a dream match against any grappler in the world, who would it be?
I have many but I think one that stands out for me is against J-Rod. We are similar in weight and I love his style of wrestling and passing and it would be fun trying to solve that puzzle.
What’s your favourite submission, and why?
I think a buggy choke would be my favourite. It’s not very high percentage but it’s very satisfying when you do hit it.
What’s your guilty pleasure meal after a tough competition?
I think many others share this guilty pleasure but it’s fast food and lots of it. I think after eating healthy to be in weight and staying in shape it’s just feels right to indulge afterward. My personal favourite is a KFC box meal and 10 extra zinger wings.
What’s something about you that people in the BJJ community might not know?
I don’t know. I feel a lot about me can be deduced by looking or speaking to me. I’m not nearly as interesting to have anything haha.

If you weren’t doing Jiu Jitsu, what sport would you be doing instead?
I think the obvious answer would be MMA but that’s a bit boring. I never really resonated with ball sports or so I think the closest second place would probably be e-sport since it’s my other favourite hobby.
If you had to describe your game in three words, what would they be?
I would like think Technical Submission Hunter closely describes my game.

LOOKING AHEAD
What’s next for you? Any big goals for the rest of the year?
I want to compete more internationally and get more experience abroad. Last year I competed at Euros and though I didn’t get the result I wanted I learnt so much and I want to be able prove myself overseas.
Are there any upcoming competitions you’re planning to enter?
So I think the biggest one would be ADCC trials In September. I think that’s the biggest one for a lot of competitors. And another IBJJF before my $50 yearly membership runs out maybe a European No Gi championship or an open.
How can people follow your journey? (Social media, sponsors, etc.)
My Instagram is @alibabamirza123. That’s where I post everything and as for sponsors, none quite yet but hopefully soon.

ABOUT BRIN

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
Hi I’m Brin, founder of AfriRoll Xscapes. I’m 26 years old, I was born & raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. I work for an industrial air compressor company called Jaguar Air Compressors. I’ve always been a sporty girl, from Hockey to swimming to horse riding, you name it, I've probably tried it. My introduction to martial arts was at a young age of 7 years old where I started Judo, absolutely loved it but when I moved schools they didn’t have it as a sport at my new school, so I had to make a choice and give it up at 10 years old. Then at 23 years old I started my BJJ Journey in June 2022 at Apex Gym in Parkmore, Sandton. I became hooked instantly and will never look back. My passion for BJJ and traveling lead me to meet many like minded people around the world. After an amazing women’s only BJJ camp in Thailand, my idea to one day host a world class camp in South Africa was born.
How did you get into Jiu Jitsu, and what does it mean to you?
Long story short, I had a terrible break up which sent me into a terrible headspace and I needed to find a community and sport that will pull me out of that hole. That’s when I came across Apex, I originally started boxing but when I saw people wearing Gi’s I joined a jits class and never looked back. I use to go to every class, the more the better. Jits & the Apex community saved me.
Where do you train?
And do you prefer Gi or No Gi?
Apex Gym, Parkmore
I love both Gi & No-Gi, I love the fast paced no-gi and the amazing grips you can do with Gi.
If you could roll with any BJJ legend, past or present, who would it be and why?
Even though she was on my camp last year, I never rolled because I’m recovering from 2 knee surgeries. I would die to roll with Ffion, she’s always been my idol and I am lowkey jealous of everyone that got to roll her.
What’s the funniest thing you've ever experienced on the mats?
My pants ripping defiantly.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I do wedding photography as a side hustle.
If you had to describe your BJJ style in three words, what would they be?
Non existent at the moment.😂
Then:
Calculated, Aggressive & Fast (Hip Tosses For The win).
Now:
Injuries, Slow & Chilled 😅
If you had to describe your BJJ style in three words, what would they be?
Then:
Some Sort of wild Big Cat
Now:
A gold Fish 😂
